For a digital marketer, it is very difficult to focus on a task and get things done, this is one of the main reasons many people fail because they never execute their ideas.

If you have a problem getting focused and always you get pulled in so many directions you’re in the right place as in this post I am going to share with you how to get focus and increase productivity as a digital marketer. 

How To Increase Productivity As A Digital Marketer

In order to increase your productivity, you will need a very simple exercise, the main aim of this exercise is to figure out what activities you perform each day and categorize them.

Firstly, you need to make an honest, objective list of what you’re doing each day consistently. No one will see the list but you, so be honest about it and include the unproductive time spent “Goofing Off” in forums, playing solitaire, etc. Now, split that list into three categories:

  1. Things that are making you money now.
  2. Things that should make you money in the future.
  3. Things that are not ever going to make you money.

As you can probably guess, you need to eliminate everything in category 3 – those are unproductive uses of your time that take away from the money makers in categories 1 and 2. 

Let me qualify that by saying that those items should be cut out from your “Work Time” during the day. It’s OK to do them in your free time 🙂

Next, we need to take a hard look at category two – which of those things are for certain to contribute to future income.

These might be things like list building, article marketing, link exchanges, and so forth, these are routine digital marketing activities that may not have a clear Return Of Investment (ROI), but are proven to work and are always beneficial tasks.

In category two, I also put things like networking and forum participation, reading emails, and so forth. You need to identify how much time you’re spending in forums, with emails, on Skype or chats, etc. and then you need to figure out how much of that time is actually productive for you. In other words, what can you eliminate from your “Work Day” to save time?

For example, I ask every one of my subscribers to become friends on Facebook, but I do not touch facebook until evenings, my time. 

I work during the day at everything else and leave my “Chatting” time to the evenings, which is my free time. 

This allows me to give the people I am talking to my full attention and it’s not distracting me from completing my own work.

At this point, you should be able to come up with a shortlist for category 2 items that are beneficial to your business activities and now it’s just a matter of assigning a reasonable amount of time to work on them, whether it’s daily, every other day or whatever. 

Just be sure to prioritize your shortlist based on future value, for example writing a blog post or shooting a video for your Youtube channel is more important than link exchanges, strike a good balance time-wise.

Moving on to category 1, take a hard look at what’s making you money now and what the ROI is in terms of time and effort spent. Not all income is created equal, so you need to make sure you’re not spending hours every day for a return of pennies per day.

So you need to make another list, this time dividing category 1 items into passive and active income. Passive income is made up of things you’ve put into place that no longer requires a significant amount of your time, like an Adsense site that you’ve installed, configured, modified articles on, and are letting run by itself. 

Maybe you’ll make 50 cents a day from it. Maybe you’ll make 20 dollars a day from it – what matters is that it’s not taking up a significant amount of your time to earn whatever it does earn.

Active income is something you’re earning from that actually takes up your time and effort regularly but does generate income. 

How much is that actual ROI in terms of dollars per hour? By what percentage is that income growing per day for the same time investment? If you’re not seeing consistent daily or weekly growth, then it’s like a job – it’s a fixed income. 

You need to take a hard look at whether or not the income is worth pursuing as opposed to more lucrative opportunities.

By now, you should have a shortlist of those items that are making you money and those tasks that are contributing effectively to your income, both now and for the future. 

You should also have identified and cut out the unproductive items that are holding you back by consuming your time on a daily basis.

Finally, you need to make a list of productive tasks that you were not doing or would like to be doing and add them to your shortlist. All that’s left for you to do is to prioritize them by value and schedule a reasonable amount of time to work on them each day.

You’ll find that when you focus on productive work each day, you’ll be amazed at how much you can really accomplish!

This is not a once-off process either – it’s something that a good manager continually evaluates, because, over time, some things lose their value, while others grow in value. 

So whenever you’re starting a particular task, ask yourself this, “Is this something that really lends value to my business, or am I just doing it by rote, like a robot?”

I’ve said this before – you should continually question everything and everyone involved in your own business activities. 

Don’t EVER simply accept any one person’s word for something as gospel; if you do, well, shame on you. You will never know for certain unless you personally test it, analyze the results, and based on that empirical data, decide whether or not it’s right for you.

That is it, that is how you can increase your productivity as a digital marketer, now what you need to do is to read that list twice, once in the morning and once in the evening before the end of your workday.

Recently I was watching an interview with the former Honeywell CEO, David M Cote. The guy has done a lot of good things in the corporate world but today’s focus is on his thought on steps to success.

Of course, he was not talking about online business in specific, but these steps can be applied in any business including online business.

So here are the three steps to success in business.

Have a short term and long term plan

Most of the business owners have short-term business plans and many of the online entrepreneurs do not have any plan.

According to Mr. Cote,  you need to have both short-term and long-term business plans and you need to invest in both, this will ensure that your company and business survive.

For an online entrepreneur, it is very difficult to focus on long-term plans, my recommendation on this is to figure out what do you want in long term and then divide it into small steps that you can do daily.

Focus on what you can do now

This is another area that hinders most successes, as entrepreneurs we tend to have big dreams and doing great things, and we end up losing sight.

If you do not have money to invest in paid traffic, do not lose sleep over it, focus on free traffic and when you get some money to invest, then do it.

So his advice on this is that, focus on what you can do now and do as best as you can, and when you grow you will be able to do bigger and better things.

Find a business model and stick to it

This is the area I had a lot of troubles, I tried every online business model you know, PPC, List building, Trading, Gambling, Google Adsense, Clickbank, and for many years I was making a small amount of money each month, the main reason is I did not focus.  

Here is the advice, many of the online business models work, but they only work if you work on them, and trying to do all of them at the same time would not move a needle.

Find one proven business model, learn it, perfect it, and stick to it in the long run and you will succeed.

When you set up your goals, you will have a time frame in your mind on when you want to accomplish your goal, we all have these big ambitions ( which is a good thing) and we want to get there as quickly as we can.

The problem is sometimes to reach those goals it might take longer than we expect, and when that happen most people tends to get demotivated and give up, we live in an instant gratification society, people want to start affiliate marketing today and make $10,000 tomorrow and when they do not make it they start questioning everything.

Understanding this will set you on a path of great success.

2: FOCUS

FOCUS stands for  Follow One Course Until Successful if you’re new to affiliate marketing or make money online niche you need to find one person, one course, one product, and one traffic method, focus on those and you will make it.

The problem I had when I started out is that I wanted to do everything, blogging, youtube, Pinterest, Twitter, solo ads you name it.

 I tried, and at the end of the day I was not making that much, I started to get results when I focused on one method and when I mastered it and got results then I tested the other.

There are a lot of good programs online to learn about online business and to promote as an affiliate but most people do not learn anything or make money because they do not focus.

3. Follow in love with the process.

After choosing what to focus on, you need to fall in love with the process, this is what I mean if your dream is to make $10,000 per month from Youtube, that is your destination, the journey or the process would be finding the topic for the video, researching on the topic, firming the video, editing the video, uploading to Youtube and sharing it with, this is the process.

If you hate the process one day you will wake up and see that you’re not where you thought you will be and you will quit.

It does not matter what you do online or in life, you need to fall in love with the process you do everyday and create a habit, remember your results do not depend on what you do once in a while, it depends on what you do every day, create your routine around what you do and you will be successful.

When I talk about learning I am not talking only about reading books, you know some people tell you you need to read at least one book per week, that is good if you can but there are many ways to learn.

You can learn by watching a video on Youtube about something you’re interested in, you can read a blog article, you can listen to a podcast or you can have a good conversation with someone with more knowledge than you in a given subject.

2:Spend less and invest more

If your goal is to become financially free, you will need to learn this, you need to start waiting for instant gratification and start going for long-term investment.

I know it is very tempting to buy a new phone after getting your first sale but for long-term success, you will make more money if you can invest back that money to grow your business.

You need to make a list of things that are not necessary for your life cut them off this way it will help you to reduce the amount of money you spend and have more money to invest in your business. 

If you own internet business, you can invest more money in buying better tools, learning more about your business, and buying better and quality traffic for your business.

Improve your network

They say that your network is your net worth, this sounds like a cliche but it is true, having connections in your industry will open the doors to you that you never even knew that they existed.

If you’re like me, you did not come from a family with an entrepreneurship spirit, and if you have an online business it becomes very lonely, you need to form a network with individuals who are on the same journey as you.

You can start by joining Facebook groups related to what you do online, do not spam those groups, just add value, ask questions, help somebody with something if you can, you will be able to form bonds and friendships that will last a lifetime and also when you need help with something most people will be eager to help you out.

When Is The Right Time To Quit Your Job?

Most people who start their own online business have on thing in their mind, to quit their 9 to 5 jobs, but do you know when is the right time to do so? In this post, I am going to give you my thought on when is the right time to quit your job. 

Do not quit your job too soon

The biggest mistake I made was to quit my job too soon, this is the thing, I started making some money and I decided to quit my job so that I can dedicate all my day to my online business, one month later the company I was promoting was shut down by SEC, it was suddenly, they even did not pay us the commission they owed us.

Since I was making decent money from this company and I was directly promoting it without building a list, it hit me so badly, I had to start over, the money was not coming in as it used to be and I was in a very bad place, my advice to you, Do not quit your job yet, and build your email list.

This then I came out with a formula that helped me to quit my job and dedicate on my online business without risk of running out of cash.

When you should quit your job?

In my opinion, you should quit your job if you manage to make three times in profit of your monthly expenditures in three months in a row from your online business.

To make it easier let me put it into numbers, let say in order to live comfortably and pay your bills and food on the table you need $2000 per month, think quitting your job after making at least $6000 per month for at least 3 months in a row.

Why for three months and why three times of income

Here is my way of thinking, if you make 3X of the cash you need first it proves that you can make money online consistent, the issue is that if you are new, you can get lucky and make $10000 this month and make $100 next month, you need to prove to yourself that you can make that money consistently.

The second reason for this is that, if you make three times of the money you need, assuming that you’re saving the extra cash, you will have money to pay your bills and put food on the table for your family for the next 6 months, even if you will get stuck like I did or something happens to your business and you lose everything you will have at least 6 months to start over and build up your business without worrying about paying your bills.

For me, 6 months is a good enough time to start over and start making some money from your online business again.

I am a huge believer that your mindset has a direct impact on your success (or lack of success). Before you get started with an online business, I want to make sure you are in the proper mindset.

There is a great book out there called “The Magic of Thinking Big” by David J. Schwartz. If you haven’t picked up a copy of that book, I highly recommend you do.

I read a lot of books in my free time ( i recommend you should), but that book probably had the biggest influence on the way I think about things now.

The very first chapter that book was titled “Believe You Can Succeed And You Will”. I won’t go into detail about what was talked about in that chapter, but I really want you to think of that statement…

“Believe You Can Succeed And You Will” ………………..

Let me ask you something…Do you really believe you will succeed? Really think about that for a second. Do you truly believe you will succeed?

I can guarantee you the top 5% are the ones who believe in themselves, and the other 95% end up giving up because they stopped believing.

2. Think Big

There is magic in thinking big. I want you to set big goals and not stop until you reach them. Too many people decide to settle for “good enough”. You need to be better than that.

I do not tell you that think you can make millions of dollars tomorrow, what I am saying here is that maybe you goals is to make the first sale but do not settle for it, think of making the second sale, third sale, your first $100 sale, and so on the sky is not the limit here your imagination is.

I just don’t want you to settle. I want you to always think big because when you allow your mind to think big, your mind begins to think of ways to actually make that happen. If you limit your thinking to what “seems possible”, you close your mind off to thinking creatively.

Allow yourself to think big and believe deep down in your heart that you will achieve your dreams.

3. Change Your Attitude

Okay, so now you know to believe in yourself and to think big. The next step is to change your attitude. I can recall the countless amount of times where I would put my heart and soul into a certain method to make money online and it didn’t work. But you know what? I didn’t allow myself to get upset over it.

If you are like me, there’s a good chance you have tried just about everything to make a profit online and haven’t found a way to succeed yet. When that happens it’s really easy to get upset and consider quitting. That’s the last thing I want you to do.

As I said, I have failed at a lot of things in the past, and I can guarantee you I will fail at plenty more things in the future, but if it wasn’t for those failures, I wouldn’t be as successful as I am today. Those failures lead to my success.

There’s a good chance you guys will fail at something some point in the future as well. When that happens I don’t want you to view it as a failure. I started to view my “failures” as a success because that just means I can cross off that method, know it doesn’t work, and move on.

4. Put Your Goals On Paper

So now you think big, it is time to set some goals and write them down, let say that you want to make $10000 per month, take a piece of paper and write it down.

Start dreaming big! OK, making $10,000 per month is great, but what do you want to do with that money? Write down the type of house you want, write down the type of car you want. Are there any charities you want to give to? Write down what those charities are. How much would making that much money every single year change your life?

Now, read your goals every single day. When you read your goals out loud every single day, multiple times per day you actually start to believe you can achieve them, and as you already know belief is the key to success.

Alright, now that you got your goals on paper and are going to read them out loud multiple times each day, and now that you truly believe deep down in your heart that you are going to reach those goals, it’s time to move on to the stuff you have all been waiting for. It’s time to start taking action and building your online business!

Take action

It does not matter if you think big or you write one million pages about your goals and read 1000 times per day, if you don’t take action you won’t succeed.

I want you to get in the mindset of doing something every single day to help your business. Even if you have an incredibly busy day ahead of you, get something done.

You will learn a few great techniques in this blog that will help you build a massive business, I want you to do one of these things every single day. Even if that means you have to wake up an hour early, get it done.

Those who take action on what they learn will succeed, those who don’t won’t succeed. I just got done talking about how you can’t view your failures as failures. Well, I take that statement back. You can fail if you don’t take action.

You can have all the knowledge in the world but if you don’t apply what you learn, it doesn’t matter how much you know.

Please take action every day. No matter how busy I am I make sure to find at least one hour to work on my internet business every single day. Even if that means I have to wake up an hour early, I make sure to get it done.

How to develop an action mindset

  1. Be honest with yourself about what’s holding you back, why you’re procrastinating, and what you’re afraid of
  2. Understand that perfection is impossible. Be content with “good enough”
  3. Realize that you can improve and refine as you go
  4. Accept that making mistakes is part of the learning process
  5. Commit to taking small actions every day

That is it, that is how you can develop the mindset for success, you can not just flip the switch and have a mindset of success, this will take time to develop, the only important thing here is to make a decision to change your mindset.
